Well, i play fute so it didn't take me very long to learn how to read vocal music. Just start out with your simple notes, how long they're counted for and rests. Everything else with come easily after that.

yes I read music.
I learned the basics about what note is on which line, and note values in about a month. What really helped me was looking at a song you are familiar with, and seeing how what you are learning relates to it.
As far tempo (how slow how fast) and dynamics (loud and soft) that all came later. I still run across a new italian term used in music and I have been playing 20 years now!
