"panther" is a vague description and means different things to different people in different geographic areas.

As stated, it is one of the terms in the U.S. for the mountain lion (also called cougar, puma, and catamount). These can be found in forested areas, deserts, mountainous regions, and swamplands too. Oh, and also in some areas (like southern california) you will find them in suburbia where they feed on people's dogs, stalk small children around grade schools, and bring down joggers and mountain bikers on occasion. (true stuff!)

In some places in the world, jaguars, are also known as panthers (the black colored ones more so than the spotted ones)

No, not all panthers live in the forest, they live in many places for a habitat.

The only "true" panther is the Florida panther. Also called Mountain Lion, Puma, Cougar and Catamount. If you are referring to a "black panther", there is no such animal. Only black leopards and black jaguars.
