Yes, I would get a cooling pad. They make a huge difference. A laptop should always be on a flat surface, so air can get all around it. Calling it a laptop is stupid, since that is the worst place to use it.
Obviously, you can't always have that cooling pad with you. But at your normal place for working, that would be great.

Heard the news lately? Laptop batteries are melting down all the time... millions of recalls. What isn't as big a "news" is the fact that many manufacturers have had major problems with overheating (even ignoring the battery issue). Some manufacturers became almost notorious for their laptops overheating and shutting down, or outright failing. They designed them for use in short bursts, not to be up and running hours at a time. They're making cooler processors, etc. to try to fix the problem, but yes, it's still a problem.
Note: Even used as directed, cigarettes have a tendancy to kill. But the manufacturers still make a profit. Used as directed, laptops have a tendancy to overheat. But the manufacturers still make a profit.

Cooling pads are very legit. I would try out your laptop for awhile first. If you see yourself complaining how hot it gets on your lap then definitely get a cooling pad. You can get one at Wal-Mart or other retailers for $20-$30.

It depends. If you have a tendancy to operate your laptop in very warm environments or sit the thing on a soft surface( ie pillow, rug,...etc), you might want to get one. Otherwise , the processor fan should be sufficient to cool the device.

The cooling pads are for if you use it on your lap or sit it on a bunch of fluffy stuff and block the vents. If it's sitting on a hard flat surface most of the time it should be fine.

Go to newegg.com or tigerdirect.com and read user reviews (best tool I have found to check out how a product works before I spend the money) I do prefer newegg though
