Is there a difference between rock and rock n roll?

Obviously rock is a shortening of rock n roll, but is there a difference in definitions or connotations?

Not that I know of! I think they just shortened it because of all the different genres of rock, i.e. hard rock, punk rock, classic rock, etc.
