Sometimes it is based on their tax-paying schedule, others have a "season" where they are more profitable. Changing the fiscal year around that can accect stocks, taxes, etc. in a more positive way. Each business would have that choice so a % would be difficult to know.

I don't know what percentage of companies do. But, some companies who deal with either the federal or states governments might have a June 30 year end to be in conjunction with the governments year end. Other reason are seasonality in a particular business or sector. If a company has a slow time of year and a very busy time of year, they might want to have a year end when it's not as busy, so they can close their books without alot of pressure. Also public accountants, or auditors, have alot of year ends at December 31. So, a client may want to have a fiscal year end, so they can have their auditors more available.
