These are extremely low, at-risk, 7th graders. They're still mastering the addition, subtraction and multiplication skills. They don't understand how math can apply to real life (I can use a calculator! They always claim). I want them to realize that math is important, relative and hopefully interesting. Because of their "at risk" stature, I teach them math despite my not having a math background so I'm not exactly the most creative when it comes to assigning math problems/projects. Any help would be appreciated--both by me, and my students.

Teach them math with money. Give them fake money from a Monopoly game. Give them an allowance. Then put them on some kind of a budget for a specified period of time. Teach them about using coupons, credit cards, maybe.
