40 gigabytes of RAM is not the standard. 512 megabytes to 2 gigabytes is typical for most computers.
40 gigabytes of hard drive space is not the standard either. 40 gigabytes would be considered small compared to the hard drives that ship with most computers these days. At the very least 80 gigabyte but more probably between 100 to 250 gigabytes.

You must mean 40 gigs of storage space on your hard drive. The standard is 100s of gigs these days. I only have 80 gigs but I bought this computer a few years ago.
As for memory, I think you can get 1 gig (maybe more?). That's a lot of memory.

Depends on how you define "need". My first XT machine had a 30 Meg hard drive (I couldn't imagine EVER using that much space). XP itself uses 10 times that much today, just for the operating system, and Vista's right around the corner. I have clients still using 8 gig drives on workstations... But with the price of hard drives today and the increasing demands on space for both data and programs, I can't imagine having a system without at least 80. My home computer has about 750 gig now...

OK guys. Givem a break. We all know he means hard drive space.
Short answer, no. Depends on what platform you are using
( Windows 95, 98, me, nt, xp, and so on).
Up through winme, 10 gigabytes of hard drive works OK to start out using email and just a few add on programs. If I was using WIN2000, XP, I would have a minimum of 40 g.. If buying a new one, I would absolutely buy one with at least 80 gig, with at least 1 GB ram and 1 GHz of speed, loaded withMS Vista when it comes out. Frankly, starting out, I'd look for a used one. Someone who knows computers and knows you, would have a better idea of what you need to start.
Good luck.

If you are talking about memory (RAM), then 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB or 2 GB are common. 512 MB to 1 GB is recommended, if purchasing a new computer.
If you are talking about hard disk drive (HDD) storage space, then 40 GB would be considered relatively small, by today's standards, yet certainly adequate if you aren't storing large amounts of videos and/or song files.

It depends what type of computer owner you are. 40gb is a low amount for a music/film downloader but perfect for somebody who just wants to talk on MSN/Yahoo messenger and browsing websites. I have a 300gb hard drive but I play a lot of games on my computer. I also have a lot of music on my computer.
It's not that hard to upgrade your memory.. you'll find an answer on that by posting on here i'm sure. If you don't know about S-ATA or IDE you should get a technician to do it for you.

40 gigs of memory?? That is friggin IMPOSSIBLE!!!
You need anywhere from 512MB to 1gigabyte of memory. There is no motherboard in the world that can support 40gigs of memory!
