A germ cell is a reproductive cell such as an egg or a sperm; it contains half the number of chromosomes of the somatic cells, which are all other cells of a multi-cellular organism. Thus, a human egg or sperm contains 23 chromosomes; all other cells in the human body contain 46.

Germ cells are reproductive cells for reproduction. somatic cells are for body growth.
