Yes, the Kinsey scale was designed to illustrate that sexual orientation exists on a continuum rather than two exclusive categories (gay and straight). Kinsey divided it into 7 categories:

0 - completely heterosexual
1 - predominantly heterosexual but occasionally homosexual
2 - predominantly heterosexual but regularly homosexual
3 - equally heterosexual and homosexual i.e. 50/50
4 - predominantly homosexual but regularly heterosexual
5 - predominantly homosexual but occasionally heterosexual
6 - completely homosexual

The weakness with the Kinsey Scale is that its rather simple, and there are people who feel that they don't fit into any of these particular categories.

An alternative is the Klein Sexual Orientation Grid, which is numbered 1-7 with the same definitions as above. However, you rate each of the following:

1. Sexual attraction
2. Sexual behaviour
3. Sexual fantasies
4. Emotional preference
5. Social preference

for past, present, and ideal (where you want to be).

If you fill in the Klein Grid at different times in your life, you may end up with different figures - which proves that sexual orientation is fluidic in nature. Whilst a lot of people may remain within the boundaries of being predominantly attracted to one gender, their degree of attraction between genders may vary. People who identify as bisexual tend to notice these variations more, and may feel confused and uncertain - especially when facing a society which appears to be one or the other.

Well, yes, if you ever studied psych or sociology.

It goes from 1 (never any LGBT experiences) to 6 (completely LGBT).

I find the scale easy to remember as there is a local (SF) drag group called "The Kinsey Sicks."

That's where the "ten percent" figure for men comes from. Also, it's long influenced LGBT culture--some gay stores, clubs, and newspapers have used the name "Category Six". I myself call my (very modest) bi Cafe Press store "1-2-5 Graphics" (It's pronounced "one to five.)

duh!!! what planet were you born on??
First serious sexual study in the 60s by Dr Kinsey and his wife.Made major headlines and was considered scandalous! On a scale of 1 thru 6, you are 100% gay (without ever having had straight sex) or 100% straight (without ever had gay sex) or somewhere in between: bisexual or having thought you were straight before acknowledging your homosexuality, etc
