I think first you need to feel out the situation first. Some people view that sort of thing as inspirational and don't mind sharing the experience, but others may feel it's nobody's business. Email seems like the most private way to ask her, that way the conversation is just between the two of you. You should start by telling her how great she looks and relate your own need to do the same. But be sure to include an advance apology if she feels the question is an invasion of her privacy and let her know you understand if she doesn't want to discuss it. I think if you go about it that way, you'll get more positive results. My son's 4th grade teacher has lost weight and she looks good. When I saw her I told her how gorgeous she looked and then slipped in "what's your secret?" She was so flattered by the compliment that she gave me her entire diet and exercise routine and even invited me to join her at the gym sometime. I think there's just a way to approach people. Take care.

Just ask her. It's not rude, she may even be complimented by it. Just say "I've noticed all the weight you lost and you look great and i was wondering if you could give me any pointers." Losing weight is hard, if she can give you any pointers, I'm sure she would be more than glad to share.

No I don't think it is rude at all. Usually when a woman loses weight she is eager to share how she did it and how she feels about it. Losing weight is a hard thing to do. And when someone works as hard as they did to achieve their weight loss they usually are pleased when someone mentions it. It takes alot of strength and will power to overcome our bad habits. So when someone notices it, it just gives you more incentive to work harder.

No actually I don't think it would be rude at all. I think they would be flattered at being noticed. I would tell her she looks great, and I would love to know your secret on how you did it, care to tell?

I believe that if you ask from a "Hey, you look great, whats your secret?" point of view that its okay. They will appreciate the compliment.

I would think she would be flattered if you went up to her and said that you had noticed that she looks incredible and asked that if she didn't mind, could you ask her how.
