I am currently using my on board sound card to run sound to my stereo receiver --> 1 quarter inch plug to the back of my pc, which splits to 2 rca plugs for the receiver.

The quality on this is terrible. It gets very distorted and crackly when I run it.

I have tried playing with most of my sound settings on the pc, and have not noticed anything that helps.

The solution that I am looking for should be cheap. I am not looking for a home entertainment system. I just want something I can play music on without distortion. I would be willing to buy a new PCI soundcard if that would be a good solution, but only if it is under $40.

I was looking for something more technical as the best answer, but since no one else chimed in, I have awarded the points. I would still appreciate more details if anyone knows.

It doesn't sound like your soundcard was designed for this type of setup. You probably need an audigy or xfi card from creative. Maybe you will find one on eBay for 50 or 60 dollars, 40 dollars will be tough. If you read the product specifications it should say something about enabling a home theater system, if not it probably will be sucky. Good luck.

i take advantage of a low end living house theater equipment with both Optical (toslink) and RCA digital audio as my computing device audio equipment. This works tremendous. The sound is transferred to the receiver in digital format so the sound at the same time as it arrives, is appropriate. in case you opt for it to do 5.a million etc audio, think about to attempt hostile to extremely with the computing device settings. Stereo, on the different hand, is effortless.
