Most of the time when someone shoots kids at school there's a psychological reason.

The easy availability of guns in the U.S. contributes to the violence.

What's striking about the latest three shootings is that two of them were committed by adult men, not by students.

Here's the latest from the Associated Press (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061003/ap_on_re_us/amish_school_shooting_133):

QUARRYVILLE, Pa. - A man who laid siege to a one-room Amish schoolhouse, killing five girls, told his wife by cell phone shortly before opening fire that he had molested two young relatives decades ago and was tormented by "dreams of molesting again," authorities said Tuesday.

Charles Carl Roberts IV, 32, appeared to have plans to molest children at the small Amish school, but police have no evidence that he actually did, State Police Commissioner Jeffrey B. Miller said.

Roberts had sexual lubricant with him and flex-ties that he had bought seven days earlier, and he chained the girls together in a line at the blackboard and barricade the doors after sending the boys and adults away, Miller said.

Roberts also had weapons and supplies indicating he was prepared for a long stand-off, Miller said.

"He states in his suicide note that he had dreams about doing what he did 20 years ago again," Miller said.

Police could not immediately confirm Roberts' claim about molesting young relatives when Roberts would have been a just a child himself, Miller said, and he said Roberts' family members knew nothing of molestation in his past.

Roberts left behind notes for his wife and three children that also talked about his anguish over the loss of the couple's newborn daughter, Elise, in 1997, Miller said.

"The note that he left for his wife talks about the good memories together, the tragedy with Elise, it focuses on his life being changed forever ... over the loss of Elise, his hatred toward himself, his hatred towards God as a result of that event, and he alludes to this other reason for this anger but he can't discuss it with her and it happened 20 years ago," Miller said.

When Roberts spoke with his wife by cell phone from inside the school at 10:50 a.m. Monday, he had been there for at least half an hour and he told her then that he had molested young relatives two decades earlier, Miller said.

Its a sick and appalling trend of violence that seems to have no rhyme or reason...copycat or just crazy people gone wild?? Everyone can speculate and research this till they are blue in the face but really nobody knows except these insanely driven murderers!!! I guess its its the freakish mentality of these fools who thrive on weaker defenseless people....they live to end with a statement of some sort in there own perverted minds? They seek media attention at any price it seems for whatever purpose they seem fit....its sad that poor innocent children have to pay the price of these acts...Yet there is some soft minded idiots out there that would protect these insane monsters form the penalties.....God have mercy on all that perished.....

there si a good book written about this phenomenon by mark ames

Going Postal: Rage, Murder, and Rebellion: From Reagan's Workplaces to Clinton's Columbine and Beyond, 2005 (ISBN 1-932360-82-4). In this work Ames argues that "killing sprees" at U.S. workplace and schools are acts of political insurgency rather than ordinary crimes or the actions of disturbed individuals.

People get sick, and they lose control. It's sad, but it happens. In yesterdays case the guy was said to have planned to kill little girls because of something that happened when he was 12... He grew up, married and had children of his own. If he was the female hater he's marked himself to be now, why didn't he just admit he was gay and find himself a man, instead of killing these little girls:( especially among the Amish, who truely are a peaceful people.

I think the US has a culture of violence. Violent in interactions with other nations, and violent with its citizens.

All of this violence is trickling down and around.

The response to Columbine was to blame heavy metal music, which is an expression of that violence, instead of looking at the root cause - violence done to the kids.

It's simplistic to increase secruity and be more militaristic and violent and a response to violence, and it breeds more violence.

Because we have turned our schools into shooting ranges by refusing to allow teachers and principals their constitutional right to bear arms. Once inside a school, these nutballs and cowards know that nobody will be shooting back. When is the last time you heard about a mass shooting at a gun show??

The guy was a repressed pedophile. The more we treat these people like animals, more they act this way. In a sane world a guy like this would go to a shrink and get his head together instead of being a copycat killer.

It will be interesting to see if people blame this guy's wife like they blamed Andrea Yates's husband.

The guy who did it apparently wrote in his suicide note that he had molested members of his own family in the past. Who knows what drove him to invade the Amish community and take those poor wee lassies with him. They must have been absolutely terrified. Om shanti.
