Kanchi = Gold, puram = City.
A place in South India, about 50-60 kms from Chennai, is where all the silk sarees are woven.
It is also the location of the famous Kanchi Kamakshi temple.
Because the weave involves a lot of gold thread (Zari work) in the sarees, the sarees got their name as Kancheepuram Sarees.
