Thsi is the most annoying thing. Why can't people write 'you're' or 'you are' instead of 'your'? It is not a difficult concept. Are people in the world really that dumb? I know it is not laziness.

Correction: The first word in the details text should be 'This' and not 'Thsi'. My fingers got a little carried away there.

noseyrose- This is a literal environment. Out of respect for fellow Answers users, proper English and grammar indicates that the communicator is making his best effort to post his question or answer without confusing people. So yes, proper English is required. People don't want to waste time trying to figure out what the hell you are talking about because you can't write correctly. Casualness is fine, but do it right.

For those of you bashing my initial misspelling of 'this', I corrected myself on a typo before your response, which is a lot more than most people do. So your argument is futile and wasting our time.

ponyboy 81 - You make a valid point. I did not do exhaustive research on my 90%statistics; this is an estimate based on my recent readings of various topics. I suppose if I visited more advanced literature topics, this number would diminish. However, overall I am trying to make a point. Based on the responses to this topic, others have noticed a similar and appalling frequency of 'your' misuse.

There are lots of good thoughts here. I'm going to have a tough time picking a best answer. Thanks so far.

If you really want it answer, you're got one here. I have a feeling that most people do not realize the difference between your and you're.
Your - is a singular pronoun. All one word.
You're - is a contraction of two words you + are. Its a quick short hand for writing.
Most people when talking do say 'you are', but when they write they put down 'your' Why? It could be because they see the 'r' at the end and pronounce it 'you r'. Again, its another form of short hand, even if it is wrong.
Not sure if I gave you an answer that you're satisfied with, but the decision is all yours.

If I was going to bash on grammar, I'd at least do spell check. ;-)
Another thing that drives me nuts is "then" and "than." I really think those are the most misused words on here. I guess 95% of people on Answers don't know there's a difference.

Yes, it's just one of many irritating grammatical errors. People tend not to take pride in the English language these days. I laugh at stupid excuses such as 'I was typing quickly.' If you know your grammar, you know it, and it doesn't even take a second to type an extra letter.

Maybe the question should be more aimed at the thought of, "Why do our high schools and colleges hand out diplomas to kids that don't know how to use proper English in speech or in writing?"

Because even if they bothered to use the handy little "Check Spelling" function (which they don't) it doesn't catch actually grammatical errors.
AND THEIR, THERE too. . .ugh.
What I really hate is when people speak and say it "your" instead of "you-er" There is an obvious darn difference!

People can't distinguish *there* verbs from *there* adjectives... if you know what I mean.
When 2 words are pronounced the same, Americans get totally lost:
It's and Its
Your and You're
Their and There...

Answers is hardly a representative sample of the world. And, just for the record, how did you come up with 90%? Arbitrarily? Scientifically? Just wonderin'.... not tryin' to be a smart-mouthed moron..

you answered your own question. usually people (or ppl, if you will) type so fast that they don't bother with the apostrophe. since this is a casual environment, and not a term paper or business letter, folks just don't pay attention or care.

i find it funny that you would talk about people that short hand or maybe it just slips their minds...this is not english class..it is not for a grade..and then you spell this wrong..come on now!mistakes happen..dont judge others...that gets annoying!!
if someones question confuses you by them using your instead of you're you have bigger problems...and as you said yes you did correct yourself...but just like you are trying to make a point so was i...no one is perfect and you made that clear yourself while you were trying to criticize others for not being...but i think that me and you could go on for hours..it was nice debating with you!
