...begin to talk about our differences civily and agree not to support candidates from any party who only offer negative ads, can we initiate change in the current climate through our grassroots efforts? How do we begin this process?

Additional point: I am not looking for the typical rote rhetoric we have all been conditioned with. I am trying to get pass the "hate the liberals"/"dump Bush" garbage. How do we go about doing that?

Your question is rooted in the Behavior Theory of Learning and development. The behaviorist practitioner elicits the desired response by providing a desired stimuli.
Since politicians don't have the ability to respond to a stimuli ,other than themselves, I seriously doubt that your proposition would work.

NO! The machine is in motion and it's impossible to stop. You would need to shut down every form of mass media before that could ever happen.

We wouldnt be supporting anyone then. All parties seem to only offer negative ads instead of high lighting what they plan to do.
