He gave us crime literature and permission to be dark in literature. (de Sade doesn't count because you weren't allowed to read his stuff.)

Well, I personally feel that he added the twist to the literature world, especially at the time of his writings. He was one of the first to bring about the murder mystery style of writing. I think that his writing dialect sets more of a "thinking outside the box" than anything else. Hope this helps!

Remember this please. His mother was dead when he was born. This apparently set the course for the rest of his life. His writings are dark, deep and mystical bordering on insanity. He was thrown out of West Point, did drugs and alcohol abuse in his life. He married his cousin who he was obsessed with too. The man is looked at as macabre for good reasons.
