Om my gosh I love this question and sometimes we go a whole day without seeing. If you really want to know take the time to do a search on this question and you will see the explanation and history of the name soccer in the US.

If you don't really care but just like to gripe or point out things that seem silly on the surface I guess your work is done here. The next time you have such an "original" please post so we might all remain entertained with your extreme wit.

Only in the USA people call it soccer. Everywhere else in the world is football, or futbol (where I´m from). Soccer should not be used at all, and FIFA should do something about it in the States and their league.

It is never going to take over football (The real thing) only in this site cause the majority of people are from the states.

soccer is derived from "association" as in "association football", which is the official name of the sport.

The rules of football were codified in England by the Football Association in 1863, and the name association football was coined to distinguish the game from the other forms of football played at the time, specifically rugby football. The term soccer first appeared in the 1880s as a slang abbreviation of Association football, often credited to Charles Wreford-Brown.

Today the sport is known by a number of names throughout the English-speaking world, the most common being football and soccer. The term used depends largely on the need to differentiate the sport from other codes of football followed in a community. Football is the term used by FIFA, the sport's world governing body, and the International Olympic Committee. For more details of naming throughout the world, please refer to the main articles above.

In the UK we call it football. We use the term 'American Football' to distinguish between our version and the American Version. In the USA they call football 'soccer' and American Football 'football.' I think that's it! :-)
