HPV is a VERY common virus. Most types are harmless but some can cause Cancer or Genital Warts. You most likely do not have cancer as abnormal pap results occur frequently. I just had a biopsy and everything was fine. Definately talk to your GYN with any questions at your appointment.

HPV is exceedingly common. Most strains are harmless, but a few can cause either genital warts or cervical dysplasia, which can potentially advance to cervical cancer. It's thought that the vast majority, if not all, cases of dysplasia are caused by HPV exposure. Often your body can clear HPV on its own. The biopsy is to determine the extent of the dysplasia so they know what your chances of developing cancer are and so they know whether or not your dysplasia needs to be treated. I had a series of mildly abnormal paps about six years ago. Since the dysplasia was very mild, my doctor and I opted for a wait-and-see approach, monitoring the situation with frequent paps. After about six months, they started coming back clear again and I haven't had any problems since. There are a couple of treatment options if you and your doctor decide that the risks are too high to wait. You should ask your doctor what type of dysplasia you have, how severe it is, what the chances are of it progressing and what the pros and cons of treatment options are.

When I first found out I had HPV it was before the whole "Tell Someone" Campaign and I was completely devastated. I discovered the "HPV ISSUES" group on Yahoo Groups and it helped me sooo much. I recommend subscribing to it, it really helped explain things and support me through some tough times.
