DJ stands for Disc Jockey. I used to be one at a local radio station. A DJ is someone who is in charge of playing music whether it be at a party, or at a radio station.

As one i can answer this for you easily.

DJ is a person who is paid to play pre-recorded music at a dance club or party. However with the advent of CD mixers and a lack of availability in some places for records the term is getting mixed opinions on who can or cannot be called a DJ.

The definition i have given is basic however some people believe if you don't mix the songs then you're not a "real" DJ some even believe that if you don't mix and use turntables you're not a "real" DJ. Some will even call themselves Turntablists instead of DJ to let people know they are purists (traditional DJ's) and some are just dropping the title DJ altogether. No if you just mix you can't call yourself a mixologist that's a bartender who creates signature drinks exclusive to them.

I'm more of the you should at least be able to mix variety because you can mix cd's with a cd mixer and even do scratch effects with one as well. I will often use music editing software to mix music because it provides effects previously unavailable to guys who just had a board and pair of Technics 1200s.

It also depends on where you DJ and what style of music. I started out DJing house which is fun to mix but i once DJ'd at a country dance bar where you can't mix because you assign music by dance style not BPMs but i was still the DJ.

Being called a DJ alone still won't get you respect in the DJ community however that comes with time and being a DJ doesn't pay anything compared to what it used to (depending on where you DJ).

There is no official qualification, anyone can say they are a dj... thats why there are so many.

Talent or experience should but do not come into it.
