How can you be so sure he is gay? If this person is just your co-worker and not a friend, I would seriously stay out of it. It is not your business and you should not get involved. If he is truly gay then that is something he needs to come to terms with and reveal to his family. I would stay far away from this situation if I were you.

How to approach it? With one hand, firmly grasp your nose, and with a smooth motion, pull it out of your coworker's business.
"Everyone knows?" Statements that start "everyone knows" are often false - what you mean, unless "everyone" saw your coworker having homosexual intercourse, is "everyone assumes."
For a moment, though, let's presume that you're right, and he is. How is it your business? What goes on in a relationship is between the people involved, not the people and their coworkers.
How you approach this is you respect your coworker's right to privacy, and that of his family. So long as his personal life doesn't directly effect his work, you approach it by not approaching it at all.

If he is faithful to his wife and kids it's a non-issue.
He might be gay, but his morals and beliefs growing up maybe have prohibitted him to act upon this. I've seen it a lot growing up in Utah and now living in Oklahoma "the bible belt" it seems to be even more clear. I believe they are only denying themselves true happiness by living a lie.
There is no need to approach this unless you are good friends with either him or his wife.

So, why do you need to approach this...is it a rule at your place of employment that gay people can't work there. I wouldn't worry so much about someone else's life, but more worried about my own. It's his life, let him lead it!

You should not approach it. Work is for work, not for socializing, not for speculating on co-workers' sexuality, and not for being nosy.
