To solve for y, you must get rid of the x. Let's make x = -1 ( you can use any number for x; each answer will be different.) Then you need to multiply; 8 times the -1+4y=12 or -8+4y=12
Now you need to get rid of the -8, so add +8 to the -8, they cancel each other out and = 0, then add +8 to the other side, which is the 12 this =20. So the equation is now 4y=20. Finally divide both sides by 4. 4 into 4y=y and 4 into 20 =5, so y=5

If u have this as ur homework then u must try to solve it urself.
And if u have tried it n ur not able to solve then i would help u out :
See this is a first degree equation in two variables. So In order to have a unique answer u need to have one more equations or else it will have infinite solutions.
SOLUTION: assume one value of x, say x = 0. Put this value into the equation u will get y = 3. Hence (0, 3)is one of the solution set of the given equation. Similary do for x = 1, 2, 3, .......
you will get infinite values of y.

8x + 4 y =12
take 8x to the right hand side.
4y = 12-8x
y= (12-8x)/4 = (12/4) - (8x/4) = 3-2x
Hence y= 3-2x

You should pay attention in class more.
8x +4y = 12
4y = 12 - 8x
y= (12-8x)/4

8x+4y= 12
-8x+4y= -8x+12
4y= -8x+12
4y/4= (-8x+12)/4
y= -2x+3

first you subtract 8x from both sides because you want to get y by itself on one side. now you have 4y=12-8x. now you divide 4 by both sides. so now you have 12-8x/4. now you have to reduce. y= -2x+3.

Divide both sides by 4. Leaves 2x + y = 3
Subtract 2x from both sides
y = 3 - 2x
