Judaism
In the Bible, fornication is defined as idolatry or adultery, that is, the breaking of the covenant vow with God or the breaking of the holy wedding vows. To worship another god (idol) is to cheat on God, and is against the First Commandment. In the Bible, God says that those Israelites who worship idols have fornicated against Him[1].
Orthodox Judaism restricts sexual activity to a legally permissible marriage between a Jewish man and a Jewish woman. A man and women are even prohibited from being in a closed room alone together if they are not married, a law called yichud, nor are they allowed to have physical contact (a law referred to as negiah).
Sexual relations between a man and a woman who are not married are considered less serious (they are referred to as zenuth) than the Biblically prohibited unions such as adultery (a married woman having relations with another man) and incest; the later are referred to as ervah (literally "nakedness"), have more severe penalties and there are serious restrictions on children of these prohibited unions (mamzerim).
Sexual relations is one of the ways the Talmud (Kiddushin 1) specifies for effecting a marriage, though this method is frowned upon by the Rabbis. Children of a Jewish woman are considered Jewish regardless of whether she was married.

Christianity
Sex outside of marriage is frowned upon as immoral behavior by fundamentalist and conservative christian sects, churches and some fringe groups. Reactions to it are mixed, ranging from requiring penance all the way to total ostracism of those who participate in it. In general marriage is promoted by Christianity, but sex outside of marriage, and sex for pleasure is not accepted by most churches as normal human behavior.
Some translations of the New Testament forbid fornication: "Fornicators, idolaters, adulterers,... will not inherit the kingdom of God". [2]. The original Koine Greek word translated as fornication is porneia. The Greek term is used by some churches to include any form of sexual misconduct, often including masturbation, and there is some debate as to the precise meaning of the word, which in Classical Greek refers specifically to prostitution and is etymologically the same root as in the English "pornography", which literally means "writing of the harlot." Porneia is unlikely to translate as fornication. Many scholars translate it more accurately as immorality.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church [3] lists fornication as one of the "Offenses Against Chastity" and calls it "an intrinsically and gravely disordered action" because "use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose."[3]

Islam
Main article: Zina (sex)
In the Qu'ran, sex before marriage is strictly prohibited. Islam stresses that sexual relations should be restricted to the institution of marriage in order for the creation of the family; and secondly as a means to protect the family, certain relations should be considered prohibited for marriage. Fornication and adultery are both included in the Arabic word 'Zina'. Belonging primarily to the same category of crimes, entailing the same social implications and having the same effects on the spiritual personality of a human being, both, in principle, have been given the same status by the Qur'an.

Hinduism
Hinduism, by the holy book, the Bhagavad Gita, forbids acts of Fornication. It is considered offensive in the Hindu society as well. Due to the recent impact of the western culture, the Hindu society seems to be coming to change its strict policies. The age group most affect by western sexual influence is the teenage group, which is more easily influenced by western movies. However, it is still forbidden by Hindu law.
Alternative hindu schools of thought such as the Tantric branches of Hinduism, the Hindu practices native to India that predates centuries of conservative Islamic influence, is markedly less reserved, teaching that enlightenment can be approached through divine sex. Divine sex is one path whereby one can approach Moksha (Nirvana), a oneness with a higher spiritual level. As such, the Tantric practices, through writings such as the Kama Sutra seek not to repress sexuality, but to perfect it. By perfecting the act of divine sex, including masturbation, as seen depicted at the 10th century Hindu temple of Khajuraho, one clears the mind of earthly desires, leaving the soul on a higher level devoid of such worries, filled with bliss, and relaxed.

Buddhism
In the Buddhist tradition, under the Five Precepts and the Eightfold Path, one should neither be attached to nor crave sensual pleasure. The third of the Five Precepts is "To refrain from sexual misconduct". For most Buddhist laypeople, sex outside of marriage is not "sexual misconduct", especially when compared to, say, adultery or any sexual activity which can bring suffering to another human being. Each may need to consider whether, for them, sexual contact is a distraction or means of avoidance of their own spiritual practice or development. To provide a complete focus onto spiritual practice, fully ordained Buddhist monks may, depending on the tradition, be bound by hundreds of further detailed rules or vows that may include a ban on sexual relations. Vajrayana or Tantric Buddhism, on the other hand, teaches that sexual intercourse can be actively used to approach higher spiritual development.

Wiccan
The "Charge of the Goddess" is an instruction of unknown antiquity that is recognized by many Neopagans. One part of it reads: "All acts of pleasure are my rituals." As such, the Wiccans consider such activity not only normal, and healthy, but also sacred, as well as charged magically. Sex magic is considered one of the more potent branches of thelema, with sex being key to the Great Rite, itself. The Council of American Witches issued a statement about their religion during their Spring Witchmeet of 1974, held in Minneapolis, MN. It says, in part:
"We value sexuality as pleasure, as the symbol and embodiment of Life, and as one of the sources of energies used in magickal practices and religious worship."

Atheism and Secular humanism
Since atheism is not strictly a religion but a philosophical position, there is no specific "atheist standpoint" on the matter of fornication; however, many atheists subscribe to a libertarian position on sex, believing in general that people have a right to decide sexual morality on their own terms. Likewise, a great many agnostics and deists take the same position

Because the phrase "pre-marital sex" had not been invented yet in 1611, the King James (and most other Bibles) use the word "fornication" instead. Older word that means the same thing.

Acts 15:20 list it as one of the things Christian are to avoid.
Romans 1:29 list it as one of the sins for which God condemns all of mankind
1 Corinthians 16:18 says to flee from it
1 Corinthians 7:2 says to avoid it by marrying before you commit fornication
1 Corinthians 10:28 says not to committ fornication
2 Corinthians 12:21 Pauls says he will judge anyone who does not repent and stop doing it
Galatians 5:19 list it as a work of the flesh
Ephesians 5:3 says it should never even be mentioned amoung the believers
1 Thessalonians 4:3 says it is the will of God that you be abstain from fornication
...to list just a few of them from off the top of my head.

Hope that helps...

Yes, the Bible says it is a sin. Try an online Bible like "Blue Letter Bible" listed below. You can type in a word you are looking for and it will give you the Bible verse(s).

Yes, premarital sex is called fornication. Here's what it says in Hebrews 13:3:
"Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral." (New International Version)

This means that you should be pure for your marriage, not have sex outside of marriage, not engage in any sex outside of the sacrement of marriage.

Yes it is. It's written all over the Bible that it's a sin. Besides, if you think it's a sin, then it is a sin. For it is written "Everything that does not come from faith, is sin." But just pretty much look anywhere and you'll find some verses pretty quick.

Depends on your religion. Yes it is written in the Bible that it is a sin. Its usually called in the scriptures: fornication. Fornication is in the same category as adultery because the person you fornicated with was not married to you by the church, thus in Christianity, any sexual activity outside of the bonds of Holy Matrimony is considered a sin.

you wont find ref to this in the bible, because at the start of the story it was cool to have like 100 partners some punters had like 700 grand kids before they poped their cloggs (so they say) then when it became clear that this system was to much of a headache for the poor blocks (imagine 100 wife's/partners nagging at once) the newly formed story writers of some religions invented marriage to sort out this problem, except for the story tellers of certain sects of Christianity were they had to live there life's wondering (or maybe they just couldn't get a chick) well i hope this has cleared up a lot for you, if you don't like a certain story get another book or just re-write the old one like everyone has been doing down the years,

I don't think sex, premarital or not, is considered as a sin. Its human/animal nature. Animals don't marry each other but they have sex all the time. If this is the case, can we conclude that animals are sinful? Of coure not. Its the same as human.

Any answer to this will be completely subjective -- based on personal belief systems, religious background, etc. What matters is that you maintain the freedom to believe whatever you believe, as long as it doesn't infringe on someone else's freedom to do the same. I disagree with you that it's a sin, but I completely support your right to believe whatever you want to.

Have to argue with you here-don't see how it can be a sin if you are in love and how do you know if you are compatible that way if you don't try each other out for size??
