Not sure where you live but on our news last night they did a study of our local schools safety procedures which for most included locking the doors and/or having a monitor or camera and intercom at the only open door. I'm in a city of about 85,000.

Short of homeschooling your children and never letting them leave your home, you can't protect them 24 hours a day. But talking to them about what is going on at a level they can understand helps. As a parent often times we just hold our breath as we have to let them go.

Talk to your school and insure they have safety procedures in place and if they do not then take the initiative and make them!

Next we need to look at why this is happening and yes, it is a multilayered answer for sure. But as far as kids who go in with guns how about we all raise our kids to respect each other and tolerate those who are different and teach them not to be mean to each other and also to report bullies and harassment they see and most importantly if they think or hear something out of the ordinary to speak up and tell someone.

Here in Racine, Wi. we DO lock the school doors. The trouble is, if the kid belongs at the school, he/she is going to get in anyway. Getting past a metal detector is no problem either.... they can just have a friend open some other door.
The problem begins with the parents. If the parents aren't teaching right from wrong or some kind of moral standard then the kid doesn't know the difference and comes to think that the violence they inflict is correct. If their mentality never developes past the tit for tat stage then this kind of thing is going to happen, unfortunately. All the cases I've heard about so far- right back to Columbine- have turned up one theme that is a common thread through all the cases and that is..... these kids were picked on to no end. Since they have the mentality of a 6 year old they only know retaliation.
To make our kids safer we need to start holding parents responsible for their children's actions. It sounds harsh- but when you've got a kid in Green Bay, Wisconsin whose parents- despite the fact that the police found napalm and bombs in their house- insist that their kid is a little angel.... then the problem starts there. Where were they when he was making these bombs? Why didn't they see the signs? They are just plain irresponsible parents that borders on neglect.
Have a great day!!!

The shootings in every case have been caused by lack of strong gun law enforcement in the united states. Have the states form coherent militias as the constitution requires and limit firearm access to those individuals, then impose a severe (say, automatic death penalty) for anyone not in the militia carrying the firearms and you'll stem a lot of the violence. It's not a perfect answer....some 0.001% of the population actually hunts for it's food still and isn't capable enough to hunt with bows after all..but it would be a good, efficient start.

The real question isn't what America can do to stop these sorts of shootings...it's why no other major nation on the planet has these shooting issues occuring. We're obviously lagging behind in some ways.

Trouble is, School is suppose to be a safe haven, and crazy kids, (YES I said it, they are freakin CRAZY) Decide to shoot up a High School and mess it up for everyone else. It's hard to say what we can do but I know that when I have Children, they will be instilled with Values and they will always know they are loved, because really the things that are happening with people going and shooting others, it's really a cry for attention, a cry for help, and they just probably needed a freakin hug from someone to make them feel safe, even if only for a second......

Mom of two in Kansas-

Violence is extremely hard to avoid. I honestly think we have done all we can to protect the kids. I myself am 16 and very much afraid of what is going on. Its rediculous.
Do these schools have a metal detector and security gaurds? The doors to the school should be locked after school has been started and only allowing people to come in near the main office wich should be located at the entrance of the building. In addition there should be security gaurds outside watching the students with security cameras and also teachers to aid them. Troubled students should see the school councelor.

In the past three weeks 2 different kids have been caught at my kids school with hand guns!!!!! One of the kids with a hand gun pulled it on another student! I suspect there are probably more being brought into the school - they just caught these two different kids. I live in a very nice suburban neighborhood with susposedly safe schools!!!! HAHA!!! The probelm is epidemic. I think all schools should be required to have metal detectors - I know this is not the complete answer - but it is a start!!! We need immediate action on this issue - it has been going on way to long.

Let us look at the problem afresh. The problem has arisen today due to the increased violence in society. There are many reasons for violence both internal and external especially due to terrorism. Some strengthening of security in schools will help. This will not solve the problem fully. We can not isolate ourselves from the happenings around us in the neighborhood and in the world at large as well. There are other problems facing kids. They themselves are becoming increasingly trigger happy. The problem of drugs is another. In the long term I feel we need to look at the moral and ethics education in schools which will create a sound base for the citizens of future. In the short term there sweet little we can do to solve these problems.

Get your government to start enforcing current gun laws.
It seems that most of these occurrences are only happening in the USA.
A study performed by your Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that of the 36 richest countries in the world, gun-related deaths were five to six times higher in the USA than in Europe or Australia and New Zealand and 95 times higher than in Asia,

I guess it's just the tough guy, "I don't take no crap from nobody" mindset of the average American person that precipitates it.

Americans kill more Americans than any war or terrorist operation ever will. It's kind of a sad situation that a once proud and capable nation has evolved to this.

God bless.

Nothing.

I know it won't be voted so, but this is the best answer.

If someone wants to kill kids, they'll do it and there's nothing we can do to protect millions. Individually, I doubt even home schooling will help - in a home, children are more vulnerable. Just think about it. If you're a killer and want to get children, and they're next door, aren't they easy to hit if you're already willing to die in the rampage, on the WAY to the local school?

The world is dangerous. Get over it like all humans have had to for ever. Don't take things for granted, and if you lose something, you'll not have grown accustomed to having it as a matter of course anyway. Is this way of thinking regarding children a sad state of affairs? Yes. Go cry over it. Damn people.

after a shooting in a one room amish school. I don't think there is a safe school anymore.

Two suggestions:
1. Home School
2. Whether it be a public or private school, ask them about the security policy and tour the school and check out all the facilities to see if you would feel safe going to school there. If not, then you certainly wouldn't want your child to go there.

Remember, we now know there is no safe school but there are schools that prepare themselves in the best possible way.
