I'm not sure, but I think it's dependent on your motherboard. There's a tool at crucial's site that scans your computer and can tell you what's compatible with it.

Using different typs of RAM can cause problems. Even if it does work it will only operate at the speed of the slowest module. So adding a faster module and keeping any of the slower modules wont give you any performance improvement. I would try sourcing the older modules from somewhere like ebay to give you the greatest chance of compatibility.

first, i shall assume that you hv three slots and all filed with 256MB PC2100 modules...if you just replace on 256MB with a 512MB [say PC3200] modules, total capacity wil become 1GB, but the total capacity speed remain at PC2100
The best is to buy two units of 512MB PC3200 and install in two slots [one slot would remain vacant] and discard all three 256MB modules...Now you would hv true 1GB at PC3200

It depends on your motherboard It must support that type of Memory. I would not think the motherboard you have will.
Look in your motherboard manual it will tell you what memory it supports and the amount
If you dont have one go to the website for the manufacturers of the motherboard and look for the manual
Your pc will not work with two different types of memory

if your machine is compatible with PC2100, PC3200 should work.
You can usually get away with running faster RAM and it is bacjward compatible.
You can NOT put slower RAM in a newer system.
Sometimes using mismatched RAM will cause problems, but it usually works fine.

If you leave a 266 speed ram stick in & put in two 400 ram sticks your ram speed will be.................266 , because your pc always runs to your slowest ram module , so your memory (RAM) will be increased but speed wont

its dependent on two things... both motherboard and cpu.
if you use faster ram with what you have now it will still run at the same speed. if your mobo and cpu are capable of using faster ram you will have to get rid all your ddr266 ok.
can you tell me what processor you have?
