Reptiles ALL use internal fertilization, they copulate (have intercourse) similar to other animals although the male reptile whether it is a tortoise, snake, lizard, or crocodile, has two "penises"! These are each called a hemipenis and they are inserted into the female's cloaca (opening for defecation and reproduction) Generally only one hemipenis is inserted at one time, depending on the side the male is on. The female carries the eggs and the males goes his seperate way. The female reptile lays the eggs OR gives live birth depending on the species. Crocodilians, Turtles, and Tuatara (rare species of reptile) ALL LAY EGGS. Some lizards and some snakes have live birth. ALL boas (including the anaconda) have live birth while ALL pythons lay eggs, for example. Although some species like crocodilians look after the young when they are born...Nearly all reptiles lay their eggs or give birth and move along...never meeting their young (many would eat them if they did!) The young are born with all the instincts they will ever need and are not social animals. Amphibians use external fertilization often referred to as amplexus this involves the male attaching himself to the female in the water (where all amphibian eggs must be laid - reptiles lay eggs on land or have live birth in the water -sea snakes). The male exudes sperm over the eggs as the female lays the eggs in the water or just above (tree frogs)...amphibians are not miniature versions of the adults as reptiles are when they are born. They start out as tadpoles and develop limbs and then travel to land, never traveling too far from the water to complete the life cycle. There are many variations but for the most part these are the main differences between reptile and amphibian reproduction.

Most are egg layers. Reptiles use internal fertilization while amphibians generally use external fertilization.
I use the words most and generally because there is always a reptile or amphibian that does things differently.

Some snakes give birth to live babies and I'm sure there are amphibians who do the same. I'm also sure there are amphibians that fertilize internally.

with drier air. Not sure but drier air may mean more sunlight--vital for incubation in temperate areas. Or, drier air may make gas exchange easier for buried eggs.

The male impregnates the female then the female encapsulates the fertilized eggs and her body expels the eggs where after their incubation the eggs hatch.
