If there's one thing I know it's that the best horror settings work best in a small rural town or somewhere in suburbia. Most victims are killed in areas where it's difficult to hide away from the creature(s). This is why Stephen King novels are best sellers even though it's at a small town somewhere in the state of Maine.

Using this setting even though it's a cliche, the monster it's always something you'll least expect going to happen. The movie "Tremors" is a perfect example because it takes place during the day and most horror movies take place at night as a mood setting.

The 'where' can be almost anywhere and the 'what' can be anything if it's done correctly along with the 'how'. In the end, it doesn't matter where it takes place by whatever killed the victims because after a while it seems to generic of a horror movie. Horror movies have to always keep the audience scared before the hero kills the creature or else it doesn't sell to the masses.

A couple of weeks ago, one of my friends had an all-night horror movie fest, and 4 of the 5 films were set in Colorado, had something to do with an amusement park (either as a scene/setting or a cause of death) and had evil spirit entities wandering about (2), or lone psychotic madmen(2).

Well, Signs, Skeleton Key, and all the George Romero Zombie movies take place in Pennsylvania. I think that total up to about ten movies. I am pretty sure that the house that was in texas chainsaw massacre was in PA, but it does not take place there. Dogma was almost entirely filmed in PA, but it took place in Pa and Jersey. The Slience of the Lambs was also filmed here, but again took place in Memphis.
