No you do not have to pay for a bad check!! the manager is to try to get a hold of the person writing the check and let them know what's going on, then they have to turn it in to the prosecuting attorney, for them to deal with it!! And no you do not have to pay if your drawer is short he is in big trouble!!! BIG! I would ask an attorney or better yet call the Better Business Buearu!! Let them know what's going on Or call the authorities!!

When you say "Check Cashing", do you mean Payday Loans? I would never work in one of those places to begin with. They take advantage of lower income families. Really they are nothing short of loan sharks.
I don't think it's legal for them to do. How are you supposed to know if a check is good or bad? Is part of your job to call the person's bank and verify the funds? Probably not. I would call your State's Attorney's office, and file a complaint. Also, I would pull out the latest newspaper and flip to the classifieds. You should be in the market for a new job.

what where your conditions of employment..for instance a lot of bars IF you are the only one working off that till WILL state before you start that you will make up any short comings as do a LOT of big businesses.............so IF the till is down at the end of he day and you are the ONLY one that can access's it suck it up you made a mistake at some place..........OF COURSE this is where you both agree [count] out the drawer BEFORE you start work so you dont start your shift with a down drawer.
Now as for the check thing this does NOT sound right, again look at the fine print of your contract IF you dont have a contact then contact the local labour board and ask for info. I personally do not think IF you followed ALL laid down instructions and the check still bounces that the down money is up to you..............

No it's not legal. That is what business insurance is for so when they take a loss they can claim it on insurance and they can get their money back. Unless you signed a contract saying that if there are any shortages that you would pay out of pocket then they can't do that. Get a lawyer because you have back pay coming plus you can sue for punitive damages if him taking money from you caused you problems with paying your bills.

I do not believe that is legal....It is illlegal to reduce someone's wage and by doing that it reduces your wage per hour. I would deifnitely look into that cause that's just wrong. Unfortunately with small businesses I think its done quite often.

No. It's up to the store owner to go after the bad check writer. As for your drawer, no, but if it happens regularly, he can fire you for it.

don't know if it's illegal or not, but its not ethical. i'd consider looking for a new job, especially if you don't make that much, a job change shouldn't hurt you financially. or, get some legal advice.
