First of all... you're goregous. Second, to fix the smell, there are many things you can do. I would start by spraying everything down with lysol if the smell is from mold. Then your friend can steam clean the carpets and seats (if they're cloth). As a final step, you can spray the thing down with Febreeze. You can purchase that in any supermarket or Walmart in the housecleaning product section. That should take care of it. Now, if your friend bought a car from a gangster, I'd check the trunk for dead bodies. You might want to clean the trunk anyway because it's right behind the back seat and if there was a leak, the trunk is probably moldy which smells horrible. One other thing you can do is keep an open container of coffee in the car. Coffee has a very strong smell and should override any other smell if you can't get it out.

Don't buy "new car" fresheners or scents. It won't work. Your best bet is to go to a place that will thoroughly clean out the interior of your car with unscented soap. This will restore the smell of the upholstery, which is what you smell in a new car.

empty the car of everything but the floor mats
vaccuum out all dirt, etc
leave the doors/windows open for the afternoon to air out the car
purchase new car smell and spray it in your car and your cars vent (in front of the windshield.) that way it will continue to come in through the air system as well.
this will restore the smell for a while
good luck

Technically speaking, you can't really get it back. The smell comes from a chemical they spray on the engine and once you drive it for so long it all wears off and is gone for good. You'll have to fake it with "new car scent" air freshner.

on a very warm day, get in your car and bring in some of those Windex wipes and the Armor-All all purpose car cleaning wipes. clean the inside of your windows with the windex stuff and wipe up the dash, side panels, steering wheel, anywhere that is porous with the armor-all stuff. leave your car closed up for the rest of the day, and you'll soon realize when you get back in your car (after it's cooled off, of course) that you get that "new car smell." i found this out by mistake whikle cleaning my car one day! personally, i can't stand the new car smell, so i douse it in jasmine scents :)
hope this works for you!
