Here's some suggestions:

- round of golf at a prestigious course. Call the pro there to learn about options, etc. You can make it a weekend getaway for the two of you.

- tickets to his favorite team event - football game, basketball, baseball.

- tickets to an upcoming PGA event (if there is one in your area). We just walked the LPGA event in our area (first one in our area ever, and first pro event I'd been to...my father-in-law caddied the event) and had a blast.

Unless he's already dropped hints about equipment, I'd stay away from that - buying him clubs, golf balls, or the like. That stuff is very personal, a real player knows what he wants to use, clubs will need to be fitted to his swing and game by a pro for optimal performance, and you may just end up giving him the equivalent of a birthday tie (yawn) that he never uses.

Old standbys, of course, include golf clothes and the like, but it sounds like you want to do something more special. Hope this helps a little.

Best to you both.

Golf shirts, golf gloves, or a gift certificate to a golf shop. Sometimes you can also get a gift certificate to a golf course where he likes to play.
