I have heard that it is possible that say for instance that if the police are conducting an investigation they can access mobile telephone conversations at a later date, if they have the mobile number, date and time. To me this does not seem to be feasible as the amount of people using mobiles must be immense and surely it is not possible to store every single conversation?

It depends what you mean, phone companies, both landline and mobile, store records which contain the number dialled, the originating number and the duration; these are primarily for billing purposes but can be looked at by the Police with the correct authorisation. But the actual conversation itself? Not as a matter of course; it would generate far too much data to realistically store, even using a very high compression algorithm. Authorised wire-taps are a different story but are thankfully still rare.

The conversations couldn't possibly be stored but records of calls made certainly will be. Then again if individuals were targeted then calls would certainly be intercepted or recorded.

Believe me Rob, it can be stored up. u say how many people use mobile phones? ok,how about how many people make calls in the next 2 minutes...a lot, and d network keeps track of each call, even to outside networks at home and overseas so in a nutshell,it can be done.

probably... there is the technology to do such a thing so i dont see a reason for those evil people not to do it. however i doubt they employ millions of people to listen to every single conversation ever held. but they could use computers to search for keywords in a telephone conversation e.g. bomb. and then someone would listen to it.

im pretty sure the police would only have recordings of telephone conversations if somebody was under suspicion of having commited a crime and they had set something up specially........ otherwise what a HUGE no ENORMOUS waste of money!!

Id say its possible, as to whether it happens i don't know. I would think not unless you, your phonecalls or actions were of interest to the police or other agencies.
