First we assume that the farmer is talking about whole number ages (no fractions).

Break down the integer factors of 72 and figure the sums:
1 + 1 + 72 = 74
1 + 2 + 36 = 39
1 + 3 + 24 = 28
1 + 4 + 18 = 23
1 + 6 + 12 = 19
1 + 8 + 9 = 18
2 + 2 + 18 = 22
2 + 3 + 12 = 17
2 + 4 + 9 = 15
2 + 6 + 6 = 14
3 + 3 + 8 = 14
3 + 4 + 6 = 13

So if the farmer's house number was any of the sums other than 14, the census taker would know the answer. This means the house number must be 14.

However, the two choices are:
2 + 6 + 6 = 14
3 + 3 + 8 = 14

But when the farmer says, "my eldest daughter likes chocolate" that eliminates 2, 6, 6 (with *two* older twins). That means the ages of the daughters are:
3, 3, 8
