They get ratings info from polling companies like AC Neilsen. They send out questionnaires to see what shows are being viewed. They also have a select group of families, individuals that meet certain demographics to keep logs of what they watch. These participants are paid a nominal fee, sometimes gifts other incentives.

advertising, they charge by minutes if golden hour s like 8-10pm they will charge more that's y we keep on saw ad every 5 minutes after the show. they gain million of dollars on that.
