i dont look down on all unemployed people. if someone loses their job and is looking for another job, i am certainly not going to look down on them. things happen. if someone is disabled and cant work, i am certainly not going to look down on them. its not their choice. but if someone is too goddam lazy or thinks they are too good to hold down a job, i resent the hell out of them. i work hard for everything i have. i expect anyone who is capable to do the same.

I don't think that it is a matter of looking down on the unemployed, but rather a flavor of resentment. They don't call it work for nothing! We working folks spend the bulk of our existence in our soul sucking jobs so that we may provide a more comfortable existence for ourselves and our families.

Most of us understand that there are different groups of the unemployed, and understand that unemployment is a complicated issue. However, regarding your impression of working people looking down on the unemployed, the general sentiment goes something like: "I just spent the past eight hours working my *** off for what little take home pay the government doesn't suck out of my pocket to support various ineffective social programs and you have the nerve to expect me to give some of it to you just because you are sitting on the corner with a 'help me because I'm pathetic' sign!".

Bottom line: If an illegal immigrant can enter this country and find gainful employment working construction or farming than it should be even easier for an American citizen to do so. Sure, it might be less than fulfilling work and might not pay well, but its an honest living and probably less demeaning than standing on a street corner holding a sign.

they dont usually the unemployed feel worthless and this creates a paranoid dillusional st8 that ev1 looks down, but bein honest m8 they are too busy with their own lives to care.but you occasionally get a pompus pri*k who thinks he/she is better than ev1 and will call even the gr8test person not just the unemployed.hope this has helped to settle your mind.dont worry look to the future and work the present to suit, ive learned that sitting back worrying brings nothing but self doubt.look at your good points and not what u see as your bad.self belief is the key to gainig what you want.ps sometimes u have to come down b4 u can go up.

arrogance, and self righteousness...bred within society.

I knew a lady from Ohio....nice lady but illiterate by normal standards....she once told me that Ohio has a area exclusively for the unemployed, and she said it in a better-than-thou way...and all the time I'm think, If she had never gotten the opportunity to work in a GM plant (on-line) she would have been forced to that area too. This is a lady who cannot formulate (on paper) a proper paragraph.

I love everybody whether they have a job or not, go to church or not, have different colored skin or not, I don't discriminate. As a matter of fact, I actually met my boy friend (known him for 17 yrs.) and he was on unemployment when we hit it off!! He has a job now, but at the time, that was OUR only income... It doesn't change WHO the person is just cause they don't have a job at the present moment.

yes I agree. I have been out of work and sometimes it is hard to get a job. I was treated badly by people while looking and told I was lazy. I put in applications and talked to lots of places before finding a good job. I have had bad jobs too. good luck. don't let it get you down. some people just don't understand and put everyone who is not working in the same pile. they could lose their jobs too, so they should at least try to understand. good luck.

It's human nature to want to feel good about ourselves and our
lives. For some of us that means looking down on others, and the
unemployed are easy targets. Also, there's a bit of jealousy on the
part of working people, who would mostly like to not have to go to
work as well.

I dont because I have been there and I know that it sucks. The only time I get bothered by someone unemployed is when I learn that he/she is not trying to work or is mooching off a family member or friend ungratefully.

Because working people pay taxes that support the social institutions that support the unemployed person.

My mother is currently divorced and unemployed, and she is very much taking advantage of the welfare system. She is comfortable with the state paying for her food, her rent, her medical care....
She was a stay home mom/"housewife" for 27 years when my parents divorced - she doesn't feel like she should have to support herself, she's never had to support herself before.
I don't look down on her, it is her choice.
And although she is lonely - she is happy with her choice.
