In the final days of his life, Muhammad the prophet and messenger of Islam told his closer followers that his life is nearing an end. Many people could not imagine that Muhammad would also pass away some day. But as he said himself, he was like any other human being and some day would leave this world. It is after his death that Islam would see a split or separation and just like the other religions of the world, there would be conflicts and arguments on who's right, and who's wrong. Although both groups agree on almost all of the basics of Islam like the five pillars of Islam, how they do each, like gestures on prayer time, varies.
The Sunnis believe that Muhammad, before his death had not identified anyone after himself to lead the Muslims. So a group of his followers gather in a meeting and decided that they should all vote to see who would be the best person to guide the Islamic ummah (population). In this group of people, one of Muhammad's close followers, Abu-Bakr is decided to take control. Sunnis call the people who lead the Islamic government after Muhammad a Caliph. The very first which was Abu-Bakr.
A group of people did not accept Abu-Bakr as the Caliph. These groups of people are later on known as the Shia's. What they believe in is that Muhammad, on his final pilgrimage to Mecca, had announced an important message to the Muslim nation. At a place named Ghadireh-Khom, he gathered all the people that are returning to their homes from Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca). He there announces that this Hajj he has just recently returned from was the last one he could ever attend. Then a question is asked about what the Muslim community should do and whom they should follow. Muhammad replies "I have left you with two very important resources. One the Quran, and the second my family" then he calls Ali and raises his hand to the sky. (Ali is Muhammad's cousin and the first male individual to accept Islam). Then says "Whoever believes in me, should also believe in Ali ". The Shia population refer to this announcement as Muhammad having chosen Ali and identifying him as the Islamic leader after himself. So Ali was the first Imam (Shia leader) but also the fourth Sunni Caliph.
No matter if they argue on the details of their views, they still follow the same way of life and are followers of Mohammad so if a Shia boy will marry a Sunni girl, they may have problems with regards to parental consent but same with Christians, either they can fight for it or drop it. Hope this helps. Goodluck.

I'm afraid there is no politically correct answer to this.
In the Qur'an you won't find anything about Sunni or Shia because it's not what God wanted. People have created this division after the demise of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).
There are many Sunni & Shia inter-marriages out there, of course they can marry, they're both Muslims aren't they?
It's sad to see Sunnis & Shias fighting on tv, because where I live we all get along and pray in the same mosque.

If one is right, is the another wrong?
Shias and Sunnis fight only where Muslims are in a majority. Where Muslims are less in number, they have other enemies-Hindus, Christians, Jews and Buddhists. As far as marriage is concerned, Muslim boys(not girls) can marry from other faiths but with one condition- that the bride should convert into Islam. Then you yourself find out if a Sunni girl can marry a Shia boy.

Dear all,
Its clear that there are so many things similar between Shia's and Sunnies, But there are also some crucial differences.
In my point of view, If you really want to find the truth, its a good job. Here is a easy way to find the answer. Just do a quick research about the remaining works(Books,Essays,...) of each leader in Islam and you honestly verdict who deserve to be Ummah leader after Muhammad.
Remember, As God says in Qoran, just a little guys will find the right guide and follow the right pass. If you want to be among this little group Besmellah....

neither is right, and neither is wrong. they each have their positive and negative points. the difference is mostly a political one, and both have the same, basic, religious beliefs.
as for whether sunnis and shias can intermarry, it depends on the individual families and circumstances. in some families, it would be accepted, and in other places it might not.
foreveranalyst, i want to say that muslims and hindus are not the same thing. the caste system is not the same as the difference in between shia and sunni muslims.

Sufism is practiced both in the Sunni (orthodox) and Shia traditions. Sufi practitioners attempt to journey God promptly. those no longer affiliated with any Sufi 'college' attempt to do and not in any respect do what appears prescribed and proscribed in the Sunna (the Qur'an and what's ordinary about Muhammad's existence). interior Sunni Islam there are 5 major and a variety of of different minor legal 'faculties'. interior Shia Islam there are a million or 2 major ones and a variety of of different minor ones. the diverse faculties determination in the way they interpret the Sunna it quite is the concept of Islam shariah regulation which consists of non secular practice. The chop up between Shia and Sunni Islam develop into in reality political and has develop into truly tribal. The Shia believe the successors (Khalifat) to Muhammad as 'Imam' ought all to come back from his relations and may play both a non secular and political administration position while the Sunni (orthodox) practice of early Islam develop into to extra or a lot less 'pick' successors (caliphs in English). There are also sects like the Druze (fairly like Mormonism to Christianity).

well as a muslim i can say that both are right . both shia and sunni are muslims, only the differene is due to the imam they follow . as we know there were imams and eah had different way, so it depends on u which imam do u follow. which ever imam u follow follow it completely .
about marriage there is no problem . no matter if u are a shia or a suni , u are a muslim thats it . but mostly such kind of marriages does not take place

Anybody who is not a muslim loves the fact that their is a rift amongst Muslims. If Shia and Sunni unites that will make Islam very strong and that will change the balance of power in the world. Its in the interest of West, Russia and China that that does not happen. That's why Egypt, UAE, Qatar , Kuwait and Saudis etc are on West payroll.

They can marry and they can even pray together.
The difference in mainly political. If there happens a fight between Sunni and Shina, it is usually because of some bad propaganda, bad teaching about the other side.
Who is right? Both are wrong. Both have their own mistakes. But those mistakes are tolerable.
