When your system is slow its because it has too many processes using memory and processor resources. The best thing to do is to buy more RAM. If you have a computer with Windows xp you should have at least 512 MB of RAM. And, if you use it a lot you probably will want 1GB. It usually does not cost more than $50 to get another 512 MB of RAM if you buy it online.

If you don't want to spend any money, then go into msconfig and disable all the startup programs. Go to Start>Run>type: "msconfig" then clear the checkmark in the box that says enable startup programs. After you restart, only windows will start up, and none of the other background programs. This will free up a ton of resources and your system will be much faster.

As some have mentioned, get CCleaner and clean out your temporary files, cookies etc
http://www.ccleaner.com/

As your PC gets older it gets bloated too and Windows takes its time to shut down applications and services; some of these may not be essential to your system and are enabled at start up. A good startup manager like Startup Inspector or Autoruns (both free) will help you keep these in check. Be careful not to disable essential services!

http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/AutoRuns/autoruns.html

If you want to tweak the registry, create a system restore point and try the following:

1.Automatically kill tasks on shutdown.
Windows XP by default will ask you if you wish to end a process if an application is running during the shutdown process. This little registry change will tell Windows to automatically end the process without your confirmation.
Go to the Start menu and then select Run. In the Run box type in ‘regedit’ and click on OK. Navigate to 'HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop' and double click on the 'AutoEndTasks'. Change the value to 1 and click on OK.

2. Reduce the wait time to kill open applications.

When you choose to shutdown your computer, Windows will automatically wait a little bit before it kills applications that are open.
Go to the Start menu and then select Run. In the Run box type in ‘regedit’ and click on OK. Navigate to 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop' and double click on the 'WaitToKillAppTimeout'. Change the value to 1000 and click on OK. Double click on 'HungAppTimeout' and change the value to 1000 then click on OK. Navigate to 'HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop' and double click on the 'WaitToKillAppTimeout'. Change the value to 1000 and click on OK. Double click on 'HungAppTimeout' and change the value to 1000 then click on OK

3. Reduce the wait time for services to be shutdown.

Much like applications, Windows XP waits a bit for the services to shutdown before it starts killing them. Here is how to reduce the wait time.

Go to the Start menu and then select Run. In the Run box type in ‘regedit’ and click on OK. Navigate to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\
CurrentControlSetControl'. Double click on 'WaitToKillServiceTimeout' and change the value to 1000 then click on OK
Remember that altering the registry can be risky so always create a restore point first!

Finally, you can try this:
Go to Start>All Programs>Admin tools>Event Viewer
Click on the application error logs and if you find event ID 1000 or 1517 or 1524, then you could benefit from the User Profile Hive Cleanup tool
This resolves problems with unloading your user profile at shutdown. This can happen when third party, or even Microsoft applications have not properly cleaned up when exiting. Windows will keep trying to unload the profile until Windows finally decides that it can't shutdown. Even if you find the application causing the problem - it may be impossible to do anything about it. This free utility automatically cleans up user profiles and prevents you from playing the timeout wait game.

You can download it free here
- http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/User_Profile_Hive_Cleanup_Service/uphcservice.html

Once installed, you will have a new service enabled which SHOULD help your pc shutdown more smoothly.

I can't think of anything else, so do a sweep for spyware with something like Ewido or Spyware Terminator! Hopefully these tips will help you. Good luck.

You could try going into Task Scheduler on the bottom bar and do a Disk Cleanup or Defragment it. Otherwise delete anything you don't really need to keep to create more memory. You may just want to buy some more memory.

You can try to run an adware removal program such as AdAware. I would also run a full virus scan. If this does not help, backup any important data to external storage, such as DVDs or CDs and reinstall your operating system and software. If you purchased this PC from a major company they probably gave you setup disks to restore the system to the way it was when you first got it.

De-fragment until it only takes about 20-50seconds. It may take ages the first time. Just keep doing it. Be patient.
Windows registry repair pro can be downloaded. It will tidy up for you. Do this offline or it could mess up your connection.
Good luck. Big Gerry

You need to check for viruses and spyware. Music is the biggest reason - too much music uses all the space. Have you used the Defragmenter? That sorts out the files efficiently so that they are consecutive rather than fragmented.

You know I have this occasionally and sometimes I have had a hidden window named shellcon, not a clue what it is but I turn off and turn back on again and the computer returns to normal, other times I have done a system restore to a previous date and that can restore things back to normal if anything has affected it.
