You can't set the NIC itself as "promiscuous". That setting is on the software side. You'll have to have network sniffing software that is capable of operating in promiscuous mode. (I assume your using Windows 2000/2003? It can't be made to run in promiscuous mode without buying Microsoft's pricier version.

Putting your NIC into promiscuous mode is handled by the analysis software. Try Wireshark http://www.wireshark.org/

On a modern ethernet network going promiscuous won't necessarily show you a lot extra as the switch will only send you traffic destined for your MAC address. On a wireless network though you'll be able to see everything.

A relevent application will do that for you while you run it. Try using Ethereal if you don't have one.
