Can anyone advise me on what kind of computor setup I should buy. I know very little about them, but I'd like to download family pictures and send them to my brother( also in color), and continue to answer questions, and do research on my own home computor.also, print out sheets. I don't have a lot to spend, but I need to be able to do these things from home. Are fax machines separarted entities, or can they also be hooked up?

You are describing some very basic functions and your system need not be expensive.

Virtually ANY new system on the market will do all of these things. (for example, you mentioned "color" pictures. It makes virtually no difference, anymore whether or not you send color pictures.)

What DOES make a difference is how large the pictures you send, and how fast the images are processed. The speed of your internet connection is also important, if internet browsing is important to you. Get the fastest service you can afford. This service, and the hardware for it are separate from your computer, but you system needs to have the proper connectivity for it.

So, here's my advice. Look for the highest processing speed you can afford. This is measured in gigahertz (GHz) This is part of the computer. You will also want a CD or DVD burner to store your pictures. You don't want to keep EVERYTHING on the hard drive indefinetly. But, these are pretty standard on most systems. Here, too, fast is good, but not all that important.

You don't need a high resolution printer, unless you plan to print out the photos. Even this is cheaper to do at a local print shop or even drug store. You can save money by purchasing an all-in-one printer, that prints, copies, faxes, scans etc, but the print quality is not as great as machines that do each specific job separately. You may also not need all of these functions. For example, if you have a digital camera, you won't need a scanner very much. You have to decide what you need. If you need a fax machine, then great, the all-in-one will also be a scanner and printer.

Safest bet is to stick with brand names, but they will cost a bit more. Even then, you may still get all the equipment you need for around $500-$700, with factory loaded software to do the basic functions you describe.

Someday you may WANT to get the high level software and peripheral equipment with bells and whistles. But you can decide that later, after you learn what you want to do that your system doesn't do well enough.

For example, I do graphic design on my system and loads of on line research. I NEED a DSL connection and a high res photo and negative scanner. I can't do without Photoshop, Illustrator, In Design, Acrobat Pro, Flash and CorelDraw, and more. Call it, about 3 grand in software, alone.

If you go with off brands, or off the shelf, store built machines you could save a couple of hundred dollars, but they will only have store guarantees, not factory protections.

Do NOT buy a PC!!! Seriously, you're just setting yourself up for trouble. Get yourself an Apple Mac Mini. It's perfectly affordable, and it will do everything you can think of, right out of the box. You won't need to install any extra software. Faxing is easy with a Mac, just as easy as printing. Macs have great software for managing your photos, as well.

By the way, speed isn't measured in GHz, it's measured in Performance Per Watt. An Intel Core Duo is faster than any Pentium 4.

wal mart has nice HP systems for around $400.00 they are very good computers. they also have very good tech support, but they do not break down very often. these computers have fax cards in them, you can send and receive faxes without anything extra, right from the computer. you can also use a separate fax machine if you all ready have it, but it is not necessary.

You can get a complete fairly late model system for as little as 300.00 at most any PC/Tech store these days, for what you describe the most basic machine available will suite your needs. Most PC's can handle fax capabilitys these days as well.
