I want to find a non-seedy, non-criminal (!) strip joint or lap dancing club that women can go to without a problem or being made to feel too intimidated - either in a single sex or mixed group. Do any exist?

They are all pretty seedy when it comes to the crunch...definitely avoid the Sports Bar in Shorditch (that is really good), Metropolis in Hoxton (very 'in yer face')....I would go for Sophisticats or Stringfellows.

Try the Hippodrome in London.... or Stringfellows... both very safe..
