Keep all doors lockes so that people can get out but cannot enter the building. Post security cameras at the main entrance so you can see who it is first before letting them in. The answer is so obvious but the sad fact is that most schools are not doing this.

The problem is that it's not only strangers who walk into schools and start shooting, it's usually students and other non-strangers.
Many things contribute to the problem, but I think a big part of the problem is possession of weapons. There's way too many guns in the U.S. and too easy for people to use them for bad things. If guns were not so easy to come by people couldn't as easily walk into places like schools and just start shooting. Even if the bad intentions would still be there, they could be stopped before doing harm to so many. Such shooting incidents rarely come up in countries where gun possession is not as common.
There is no simple solution to it though, nothing that will solve the problem completely, but there are ways to reduce the risk of such serious incidents.

THe problem is simply that violent people know that the rest of society are sheep, and as sheep, they are not armed, and cannot do anything against anyone who is.
School yards are particularly good pickin's because there are often laws specifically forbidding firearms on school grounds, or even within 1,000 feet of one! Even if guns were allowed on campus, 99.9 percent of all educators are complete wussies, to the point where one might get sick even in the presence of a firearm (actual claim from a California school teacher)
so there you have it, a bunch of hand picked, ready-plucked chickens, you don't even have to be brave, all you got to do is be bad enough to take advantage of it.
THe answer, of course, is to have armed guards. This is the ONLY thing that would make someone like that have second thoughts, and then all he would do is pick a different shcool, where there were no guards.

The violence first needs to be stopped outside the schools, what happens there is just a reflection of the violence that surrounds us.
