That all depends on your gauge, you need to know how large the child's foot is around the largest part, then multiply that by the gauge number. I don't know if you're talking about a babies' size 4 or a youth size 4, and I also don't know if you are using cm or inches, but here's an example:

Child's foot = 7" around instep
Sock yarn gauge = 8 stitches per inch
7" x 8 spi = 56 stitches cast on. You could round down a bit for a slightly snugger fit.

the two certainly one of my grandmothers have been gifted in diverse techniques. Mum's mum replaced into good at crochet paintings, table mats, chair back covers etc. and she or he taught me some uncomplicated stitches. i won't do what she did nonetheless. My dad's mum replaced right into a completely staggering embroiderer. It replaced into so neat that the two ingredient could be used because of the fact the main remarkable ingredient. She taught me a thank you to try this and that i will virtually do it as smartly as she did yet my undesirable eyesight now prevents me doing it. Knitting socks and repairing them very smartly replaced into yet another of her skills. She taught me to darn additionally (yet i've got not like knitting) and my darning wasn't undesirable in any respect yet i does not desire to do it now. Grandad and pa has handmade socks from her and liked them. We, the grandkids, won scarves, gloves and the lads won balaclava helmets additionally. maximum persons of that technology had skills which led to somebody receiving some thing to placed on made by using them. no longer having a T.V. leaves greater time to apply those skills. all of us spends too plenty time the two observing T.V. or using the cyber web to restore those previous skills. unhappy somewhat.

Make a swatch first to find out your gauge. You might want to use smaller needle than recommended to make the fabric warmer.
