Im in my final year at uni (BSc Computer studies) and looking for some ideas on what I can do as a final year practical project. It must be something to do with computer networks. Building a network alone is not sufficiant it must be something more techincal and indepth. Does anyone have any realistic ideas on what I could research and look to improve?

At my old job we had a corporate headquarters and six campuses spread from New Mexico to Florida. I was the only IT guy for all six colleges, and travelling back and forth was pretty much impossible. They had no network anywhere when I started... I set up domain-based LAN's on each campus, then linked them all together in a WAN, using router to router VPN's. Hell of a project... took me a year. You might try something similar. Multiple LAN's with multiple domains; WAN through VPN's, trust relationships, etc.

just a suggestion - but you could look at a project on how someone would go into a company with an old system and reinstall a completely new system. How would you ensure that getting rid of the legacy system and inputing the new system would not interrupt business operations? That could be a load of gumpf, but it is the idea that pops to mind.

Wireless or cabled networks..
Cost analysis. Cabling man-hours, that sort of thing.
To cable or not to cable. Remember. Wireless networks were not viable until they managed to increase the bandwidth. They may not be up to gigabit but to achieve this in most networks you have to replace...Wait for it, all your cabling.
