May I suggest that some of you re-read the question.
The word "support" does not appear but the word "Sympathise" does.
This is borne out by the FACT that leaders of Sinn Fein, the political wing of the IRA,received regular invitations to The White House to attend functions.
Also it is well known that they did have support from a certain US Senator by the name of Kennedy, perhaps you've heard of him.
None of this actually answers your question. But that can be done with the use of only one word
HYPOCRISY

You should be 100% sure of the facts before asking that question. It's no good relying on the media or just hearsay. Do some background research on the IRA funding and then come back and rephrase your question.

There were American Citizens (primarily in the northeast, whom were of Irish descent) who supported the IRA. But the US Government never, ever did. If you believe they did, I encourage you to cite a credible source of information. I believe you will very quickly find that you are wrong.

More aptly, why is the American government so keen on its war on terror when it used to sympathise, fund and train the Mujaheddin (who went on to become the Taliban and parts of Al Qaeda)?

Well as an american citizen I'm obviously an expert on these issues and since I'm on yahoo answers I'm obviously a good ambassador for my country; so allow me to elucidate the issue for you. We like war, its good for the economy, it keeps us on top. Whether its your war or our war, or in the case of the war on therror, many countries war, we don't care, it's good money, and it lets the rest of the world know who's boss. We firmly believe in the laws of nature. Sure we'll tell the evangelical extrimsts we're with them if it wins us the right people in office, but we really believe in the laws of nature. We are the alpha and the omega.

The American Government never ever supported the IRA. EVER! You are lying though your teeth. Now that all being said, there were many sympathetic American Irish supported a lot of the IRA, but that was not government sanctioned at all.

Beats me. You're right about the IRA though, America used to GIVE them the explosives they used to kill people in Northern Ireland and England. And they fund Israeli terrorists as well. Hypocritical?

The phrases 'home to roost' and chickens coming...."

The Americans are undereducated thugs who do nothing except for their own amusement and benefit. Guantanamo bay will haunt them the same way Belsen haunts the Germans. They are bang out of line and you are right, they supported the IRA when we were in trouble, but now the boot is on the other foot, the British are being ever-so-gentlemanly about their predicament.
