eBay was founded in 1995 by Pierre Omidyar as "AuctionWeb", part of a larger personal site that included, among other things, Omidyar's own tongue-in-cheek tribute to the Ebola virus. Originally marketed to investors as a place to sell and trade PEZ dispensers, the site belonged to Echo Bay Technology Group, Omidyar's consulting firm. He had tried to register the domain name "EchoBay.com" but found it already taken, so he shortened it to his second choice, "eBay.com".

The name refers to an auction bay, which is where auctions happen.
'e' is for electronic. Electronic auction bay is shortened to eBay.

Echobay may have been the actual name intended when the original eBay was registered, but eBay became the World's Marketplace as an electronic auction bay.

in the olden days merchant ships would sell goods at the bay of where the boats would land. So if a bay is also where people go for fresh and unique goods an electronic bay would be for the same purpose but on the web "electronic bay" Ebay.

Don't know for sure but it sounds good right?

Originally they chose the name Echo Bay Technology. But there was already a mining company with that name so it got shortened to eBay.
