My laptop won't work unless the power cord is plugged in and it is elevated (books underneith it or something). Do I need a new laptop battery or is it something else internal?

could be the battery or the power lead itself or even the part on the motherboard where the battery charger goes into. be worth getting it checked out by a pro

That would depend, has it ever heated up and gone off w/o warning, if it has then it could be something internal. if not then it could be your battery is dead, because you battery could only be rechared so many times before the battery life decreases, and if you have the power connected 24/7 that battery life will decrease like crazy... but my best guess is that you had it connected all of most of the day and the battery life died.... you should recharge it and disconnect it as soon as its done...

Try borrowing a similar battery from some one and see if that works. If it doesn't then its probably something wrong internally.

contact your laptop company. if it is HP they have an online email system where u can trade information with them about your laptop and they can give you hints to find out what is wrong.
