it isnt on mute it has totally vanished from ma system.

To reinstall sound, that sounds like a driver problem. Do you have onboard sound or a sound card? You need to know what type of sound you have and the name of it so, you can get the driver from the manufacture's site. If you do a fresh install of XP, it usally sees the sound driver; however, this doesn't work for each machine.

not really enough information to give a definative answer but have you checked to make sure the sound has not simply muted ??
start - control panel - sounds and audio - on the volume tab - click advanced ..then make sure all the sliders are near to the top and none of the channels are muted

open control panal / sounds and audio devices
check to see if mute is ticked (untick it )click on advanced in that area check others are not muted ( done )
right click my computer / properties / hardware / device manager
check for any "(?)" with yellow or green background, if there are under sound ,video, game controlers, reinstall your sound and video drivers that came with you pc
if you find any with a red x right click them , then click enable

Use the built in Restore operation to roll your system back to a point before the sound application was damaged or deleted.

Go here and look for fixes. then look for the fix that you need from the drop down box, im not to sure what is missing from your pc otherwise I would look for the fix for you, good luck.
