Or do you have to be naturally gifted?

Anyone can learn to play piano, although some natural talent does help. It's all about getting the chords and notes down. Much like any instrument, once you learn the basics the rest just takes hours and hours of practice! Some people (like the band Seether) suggest at least 7hours of practice a day to get it down correctly.

Once you've got the basics you can go for advanced lessons to improve on your technique.

Being naturally gifted can be wonderful, but thousands of people - who take the time to practice - can become proficient. I think it's safe to say that at least one hour a day would help in this endeavor! Remember - have fun!!

Anyone can reach some degree of techinical proficiency with regular practice. Practice and money can not give a person a mucical ear which is necessary for advanced classical or jazz performance. Either you have it or not

Being gifted makes it easier, but it also makes it easier to be lazier with practice! Practice does not make perfect, but it certainly will improve your proficiency to some degree. Everyone's potential is different, but practice will eventually lead to your fulfilling yours, if that's what you want to do.

It always helps to be naturally gifted. If you work hard, practice regularly, and don't give up, anything is possible. Also, lessons wouldn't hurt.

the usual cliche: practice makes perfect but add passion in what you do and patience.

you can practice all you want but if you're not into it, it would just sound so technical, no emotions..

patience refers to the fact that it doesn't take overnight to change from an amateur to a virtuoso..patience pays (*wink*)
