www.purevolume.com has a lot of excellent bands, not everyone has all (or even any) songs up, but it's a great way to discover new bands.(And maybe after you get hooked, you'll go out and BUY the album therefore SUPPORTING your new favorite band so that they don't win the "starving artists who could have made it big if they just had some money" award.)

I know Aquafresh had a promo going where if u bought a specially marked package it gave u a code for 3 songs free download from Sony connect music service which is legal, I have gotten quite a bit free from there for buying like 99 cent toothpaste and stuff you need anyway!

Try news servers (usenet)

You can request songs/albums.
Usually posted within a day or two. Although at times your request is ignored. There are news groups for any genre you can think of. Most ISP's provide this service free of charge.
You need a newsreader app to download and those are free as well.

See the link for list of newsreaders and other pertinent info.

Limewire is the best software for downloads. It will tell you if the file is potentialy dangerous. Download limewire first and install it. Then you can download Limewire Pro from Limewire. It works like a charm.
