One of the fundamental principles upon which this country was founded was the freedom to chose for oneself. The fact that this has become such a hot-button issue in today's society is very indicative of the general social state of the nation.

Do we really have so much time on our hands that this is the worst thing that many of us can think to worry about? Independant investers and some corporations spend hundreds of millions of dollars a year to, basically, complain about other people's habits. Sadly, it's creating yet another rift in our American society. The debate is further dividing an already torn nation. With as many truly important issues going on in the world as there really are, it's somewhat sad and disheartening that something as insignificant as smoking draws so much attention. We Americans are so comfortable in our lives that many of us, to feel gratified or justified, now seem to need to force thier own beliefs and opinions on other people. That, friends, is called Facism.

Have we already forgotten the fact that 90% of the automobiles we drive EVERY DAY emit over 3000% MORE carcinogens and greenhouse gasses into our atmoshpere EVERY DAY than all the smokers in the world combined? That's food for thought.

And before you jump to conlcusions : No, I am not a smoker. I find it a filthy habit and quite disgusting. HOWEVER, I recongnize the fact that I live in a country in which my fellow citizens have the right to poison themselves in that way. And if I want to avoid it myself all I have to do is not be where they are. That way I don't have to endure thier smoking and they don't have to endure any endless criticism over a personal preference.

I'm really not bothered.

I'd sooner everybody smoked in public than drove cars; a smoker would have to go some to keep up with a common combustion engine in terms of creating carcinogens.

And you only have to look at factories belching out fumes to see how one very small group of people have been made in to social pariahs for crimes in which most of us play an ongoing if indirect role.

If anything, I sympathise with smokers.

I don't think cigarettes should be smoked anywhere! It is a disgusting habit, and it also is very hard on your health. There is, I don't know how many chemicals in a cigarette itself. But it would be better for you and everyone around you if you didn't smoke at all.

that would depend on how many rights you want taken away.. what will be next, not drinking coffee on a public street? how many freedoms are you willing to give up? you need to stand up & say "no more"

I THINK THERE SHOULD BE A SPACE PROVIDED FOR THOSE WHO SMOKE, BUT IF I HAD MY CHOICE, I WOULD WANT ALL TO STOP SMOKING AS IT IS DEADLY. IT HAS KILLED MY MOM, GRANDMA, ALL MY MOM'S AUNTS. MY SISTER SMOKES. I WORRY AS ALL DIED OF LUNG CANCER.
