The demoncrats don't want the Fair Tax because they feel it strips them of power, the power to tax. With the "prebates" (monthly refunds for basic necessities) in place the only people paying more would be those spending more. It truly is a "Fair Tax"! I'm not a Democrat but I would like to answer this.

For years some politicians, like John McCain and Joe Lieberman, have tried to push through a flat tax bill (which I fully support).

Their version of the flat tax says everyone, no matter how rich or how poor, pays the exact same % of their income on taxes. To me this on the only truly democratic way to collect taxes.

The only problem is that the McCain bill would also eliminate all the tax loopholes and tax dodges and shelters that the wealthy and the large corporations often use to pay little or no taxes, so they oppose it every time it comes up.

The truth is very few wealthy people in this country ever pay anywhere near what their tax bracket implies. That they do pay more than their fair share is a major lie being pushed by a specific agenda. The tax dodges, shelters and credits ensure that the middle and lower classes truly carry the blunt of the tax burden in this country.

The "FairTax" plan is the most misguided tax plan in U.S. history. To be revenue neutral, the retail sales tax (VAT taxes intermediate goods, not just retail) would be approximately 100%. This tax will apply to rent. So, double your current rent...that's what you'll pay under this absurd plan.

What type of effect will a doubling of the price of homes, cars, rent, etc have on the economy? Well, the immediate effect would be a deep recession if people choose to save rather than spend. If they choose to avoid taxes and keep spending, this will create a huge black market, requiring an even higher retail tax rate.

The only people who will benefit from this silly plan are the corporations, rich and the retired (who have consumed almost all they're going to and will avoid retail taxes).

The most commonsense tax plan seems to escape too many people, who should have commonsense. Those who have an unfair share of the national income should pay an unfair share of the national income taxes!

A federal sales tax would entirely replace the federal income tax, thus ending the Internal Revenue Service, audits, paycheck withholdings, and the drudgery of filing tax returns. Under a sales tax, workers receive all of the money they earn. Since funds are untaxed until spent, a sales tax does not discourage savings.Democrats would have you believe that they want to tax the rich more and protect the Middle Class. Not True ! Democrats like the current system because their wealthy friends like the system, their wealthy Lobbyists help create the system over 40 plus years of Democratic control of the House. Democrats impune the attempts of Republicans to simplify the tax code, lower tax rates and close loopholes. Democrats scream on one hand about the wealthy but they don't pay their fair share of tax at all. Tehresa Heinz Kerry and her Husband( John Kerry) paid a net 12% on their tax returns shared during the last Presidential race. Millions in investment income and wages and they pay only 12%. On investment income they paid ZERO toward supporting Social Security and Medicare. Why? There is no payroll tax on investment income. How much tax did I pay 30% , not including everything else they take out ,and my last name is not Heinz................

Now why are most Europeans left-leaning,and in this country there is a vitriolic right-wing minority? Is it because of American political propaganda? I think so.

I think taxes should be a bit(I said a bit) higher for the wealthiest Americans,as a far-right economic system does NOT benefit the bottom half of the US financially. But try telling that to the working poor who have been brainwashed into thinking you must be "gay" if you so much as vote Democrat. Thanks,Karl Rove.

But the trend is chainging. The FairTax isnt perfect, but it beats the
right-leaning trend that is squeezing out the mioddle class.Serious tax change probably wont occur anytime soon.Too many right-wing idealists in Washington.

What if I am a republican and I like the idea-- I don't see the IRS liking the idea all that much...

And not just the IRS, look at all the businesses that exist solely to deal with taxes!

But, it would solve the problem of the War between CPA's and Tax lawyers!

Dems, take note: It is the ONLY way to tax the wealthy...

I am a democrat, I am not entirely sold on the idea of it. I want some assurance that it will be fair to all and not just the very rich or the rich. I think on the surface it is a good idea. I could live without the IRS no problem. But we need to move carefully on it to make sure that the repuke's don't slip it in and break it off, for the middle class.

The democrats believe the fair tax is unfair. Democrats believe that those who earn more should pay a higher percentage of their income to taxes than those who are not.

Basically, it's a form of limited socialism, having the successful make up for the shortcomings of those who are not.
