Coldplay... that singer's whining voice!!!!

And that Lily Allen... the music sounds cheerful, but the words are rude and miserable and eternally complaining!

Depressing Bands

The Smiths deal with depressing themes but were brilliant and also had a lot of humour, Scott Walker made melancholic but wonderful music. There's a band called Tindersticks who specialise in that kind of downbeat grandeur, indeed they got used in The Sopranos once when Tony was having a breakdown!
I suppose Radiohead and especially 'Creep' too. Really though sometimes listening to that kind of music can be quite uplifting, it makes you fell as though someone else has been through the same thing.

Why will I be in trouble? It's true, Joy Division were a depressing band, Ian Curtis killed himself partly due to his depression. I know if I want a good mope I whack on a bit of Unknown Pleasures.

Bauhaus.Anyone who can write a song about dying from mustard gas in the trenches during WW1 (the sky's gone out) and who's first record was Bella Lugosi's dead must be contenders.
The sisters of mercy are another good one, first album-Black planet,singles-Alice (needs you like she needs her pills to tell her that the worlds OK) Floor show (this is the floor show of happening hell) and their version of Hot Chocolate's Emma(finds girlfriend dead) is just sublime.

The mere fact that Keane or Razorlight exist is a pretty depressing indictment of the brainlessness of the music buying public. Hope this helps.
